Words with Willie

Had a nice wee chat with William McIlvanney after his event at the Edinburgh International Book Festival yesterday. I told him I was a big Connery fan and that I really enjoyed his initial chapters on ‘Almost a Book About Sean Connery‘ which he’s posted on his website. He seemed chuffed I brought it up and said it was the first compliment he’s received about them. I hope he was referring to that day rather than the last few months.

The event itself was interesting with the mighty Ruth Wishart challenging Willie and igniting her usual spark as chair. It was slightly tarnished by the shift in focus to the Independence Referendum when Alex Salmond popped up to read an extract from a Laidlaw novel. Still, a real pleasure to hear Willie read from his work not just because of the quality of his prose but his voice is utterly listenable.

Nice Guardian article on the event
